Moss and algae problems…
As most of you are aware of, we continue to have an excessive amount of moss and algae on the lake. A special meeting was held on Sunday, June 22 at the shelter to discuss our options.
After some discussion, the board voted to hire New Century Environment owned by Mike Gutzmer to treat the lake with a herbicide, and to test and evaluate our water quality for long term solutions. This treatment will be happening yet this month.
These treatments are EPA approved, and pose no harm to swimmers or fish. As an extra precaution, it is recommended that you may restrict your pets from drinking the lake water for about 7 days. This treatment and New Century’s services at this time will not require any special assessments.
Part of the algae growth problem has been an excessive amount of snails (brought in by waterfowl), that has been hosting the parasite that is causing swimmer’s itch condition on many of our swimmers. For those that have had this problem, it is very unpleasant. In the short run, consider applying a barrier to your skin (sunscreen with insect repellent or lotion) before swimming. We are urging residents to rake and remove as much of the moss/algae prior to treatment, to improve the effectiveness of the granular herbicide treatment and remove many of the snails that attach to this overgrowth. New Century will not be treating to the lake to specifically to eliminate the snails and parasites. If residents would like, additionally, to spot treat for this, a granular copper sulfate is available from many sources (MARC Chemical and TSC locally). Also, we urge residents to discourage any ducks or geese from residing on the lake.
